Local teams fall to 0-2 on first day of men’s curling provincials

Teams with local representation didn’t fair well at the opening day of the Men’s Canadian Direct Insurance provincial curling championships in Vernon yesterday.

Kimberley’s Tom Buchy rink and Kelowna’s Jeff Richard — whose vice-skip is Tom Shypitka of Cranbrook — are 0-2 after opening matches yesterday.

In the evening draw, Buchy lost 8-6 to Bert Gretzinger of Kelowna, who stole singles in three ends.

Buchy’s team includes Ken McHargue, Dave Toffolo and Darren Will. They have also picked up T.J. Perepolkin as a spare.

Richard was up against Greg McAulay, with the Richmond rink scoring three in the 10th for a 9-7 win.

Buchy opened the tournament against Paul Cseke of the Royal City Curling Club in New Westminster. Steals in the second and eighth ends were the difference in a 6-4 win for Cseke.

Richard was matched up against Royal City’s Sean Geall in the first draw. The defending B.C. champ scored deuces in the second, third and fifth ends for a 6-3 victory.

The tournament continues today, with Buchy up against a pair of Vancouver Islanders: Victoria’s Jay Tuson and Steven Waatainen of Nanaimo.

Richard will face Cseke and Bob Ursel of Kelowna.

Buchy and Richard will meet each other in Thursday night’s draw.
