No one was more disappointed to hear that Kimberley Summer Theatre were unable to produce a show this year than Kimberley soprano Tanya Siega.
“I was very fond of the Vaudeville show,” she said. “I couldn’t imagine there being no entertainment in the Platzl. Even before the Vaudeville show we had the accordion lady. It’s what Kimberley does.”
And while Siega says kudos to Kimberley Summer Theatre for establishing such a fine tradition, she can’t stand the thought of a silent Platzl this summer and had come forward with a proposal of her own.
“My idea is not to take the position permanently, just to fill a void until Summer Theatre returns.”
Siega’s idea is Soprano in the Platzl, a one woman show featuring classical opera music in six different languages.
“I want to make it a celebration of Kimberley’s multiculturalism,” she said. “If I’m singing in Italian maybe I could tell some stories about some of our first Italian families.”
Siega will sing in the costume of a turn of the century opera house entertainer, accompanied by recordings of the London Symphony Orchestra, the Royal Symphony Orchestra and the Prague Symphony Orchestra.
Siega has all her own sound equipment, which will cut down expenses considerably. She attended the City of Kimberley’s pre-budget meeting last week to bring her funding request to Council.
She is also approaching other sponsors.
She is hoping to perform three times a week, likely Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday.
“The saddest thing for me is to imagine tourists gathering in the Platzl at noon and then there’s no show,” she said “It’s not Kimberley without entertainment in the Platzl.”
