The Sonatina is King on June 6 at Royal Alex

Fifth annual Sonatina Sunday features works from the classical period

The East Kootenay Music Teachers‚ Association is once again holding their final event of the year at the Canadian Museum of Rail Travel in the Alexandra Hall.

The fifth annual Sonatina Sunday, June 6, features 19 young performers playing from the vast sonatina repertoire.

The sonatinas will be performed on the Hall’s pristine John Broadwood and Sons grand piano.

Cara Webb, with the EKMTA, says there are some new developments in this year’s program. “They’ll be introducing themselves and their piece, and offering an interesting fact about the composer, the piece or the style.”

Webb added that as well as local performers, three music students from Creston and one from Fernie will also be playing. The program will also feature vocal performances and one violin work, in addition to the piano sonatinas.

The sonatina — from the Italian “sonare” (to sound) is a smaller version of the sonata, following the basic form of exposition, development and recap. The sonatina figures largely from the classical period (the mid-1700s to the early 1800s); renowned composers of the style include Mozart, Beethoven, Haydn, Clementi and Kuhlau. Webb says all pieces performed will be intermediate through advanced — Grade 5 and up — so Sunday, June 6 should provide a beautiful afternoon of music.

Sonatina Sunday begins at 2 p.m. The Museum has changed the seating configuration and every seat has a good view of the performers on the well lit raised stage. A reception follows.

“Once again we have marvellous sponsors who help us defray costs, for which we are very grateful,” said Lorraine Butler, with the EKMTA. “We would love to see the 240 seats filled this year, and tickets can be bought at Lotus Books, Railway Museum, EKMTA teachers and Black Bear Books in Kimberley.”

Seat prices are $10 for adults, $8 for seniors and $5 for students and children. Net proceeds go to the more than thirty scholarships the EKMTA presents every year.
