There was a fire start up the St. Mary Lake Road over the weekend, but it was quickly out by the Forest Service.
However, it does point out why work currently being done in the Kimberley Nature Park is necessary.
“Crews are working in the Nature Park now and from what I understand it’s going very well,” said Mayor Jim Ogilvie. “It’s all hand work, some felling but mostly cleaning up debris.”
This is fire smart work, and the city, Nature Park Society, Ministry of Forests and the city’s fire consultant and fire department have been working for some time on a prescription.
“We all know a major fire up St. Mary’s could get into the Nature Park and if it did it would pose a significant threat to the City.
“The whole reason we are doing work in the Nature Park is to keep the fire on the ground.”

The contractor is working early morning to mid-afternoon and trails will only be closed during that time period on weekdays.
