Post Relay Kimberley

Cancer Society looks for Kimberley event

Since the cancellation of the Canadian Cancer Society Relay For Life in June, the Society has been reaching out to Kimberley, trying to come up with a solution, or an alternate event.

Sally Ginter, Regional Manager, Southern Interior Region, for the Cancer Society, visited Kimberley City Council this week to update Council on progress.

Ginter told Council that a focus group was meeting to discuss what happened, why it happened and how to move on.

She said there was a second meeting this week to decide what needed to be done, how the Cancer Society can offer support and resources and what Kimberley residents would like to see.

“The Relay was not well received in Kimberley this year, as you know,” Ginter said. “The Cancer Society is open to any kind of event residents would like to see. We’ve talked about a winter event that Cranbrook would be invited to attend and if Kimberley has no Relay, Cranbrook would extend an invitation to theirs. We are quite prepared to rename it the Kimberley Cranbrook Relay For Life and name the winter event the Kimberley Cranbrook whatever.

“We have made a commitment to be flexible. The door is wide open in the focus group. But I’m quite confident it will be a daytime event.”
