There?s no mistaking what the will of the majority in Kimberley is on the deer problem after the survey results came in, says Kimberley Mayor Jim Ogilvie.
?A very high percentage (67 per cent) are concerned and another high percentage (58 per cent) want to see a moderate reduction in deer numbers,? Ogilvie said.
The city will now be moving quickly to form the Urban Ungulate Committee ? in fact the terms of reference for the committee will be in front of Council on Monday night at their regular meeting.
Council will also approve advertising for committee members at that time.
?We hope to have some recommendations fairly quickly, at least in time for next year?s budget considerations,? Ogilvie said.
?We are going to be talking about the results of the survey to the Minister of Environment at next week?s UBCM because it?s pretty decisive.?
?A lot of people want to see something done. Most people said they wanted to see a moderate cut in numbers and there could be a variety of solutions. Different communities have done different things and the committee will look at all of them. My best guess is the committee will come up with a combination of things that could be done.?
However, any solution will have costs associated with it, which is why the province must be a part of the process, Ogilvie said.
?We will look to the province for funding. After all, they are their deer.?
