It?s going to referendum. British Columbians will get an opportunity to say yea or nay to the Harmonized Sales Tax, but not until next September.
Premier Gordon Campbell announced Monday that the question of the HST will go to voters next September 24.
However, Columbia River Revelstoke MLA Norm Macdonald asks, why not hold the referendum now?
?Why wait a year?? Macdonald asked. ?You don?t need to wait a year. Do it right away. Sure it will take a bit of time to organize, but not a year. Do it now.?
?I don?t think there is any question as to how British Columbians feel about the HST.?
Macdonald says the wait won?t help anything, in fact people might even defer a big purchase like a house or a car, thinking to save money if the HST is repealed.
Macdonald also says he is nervous about Campbell?s promise to allow a simple majority to decided the referendum.
?The rules in the legislation are incredibly onerous. ?The Premier has said the rules will be different, he said he would accept a simple majority. If that?s what you want to do, change the rules so it?s not just your word. You can give a long list of things this government has said that were not true, starting with the HST itself. If you are serious, let?s put new rules in place.
