The Kimberley Dynamiters had an up and down weekend, with their pair of games Friday and Saturday at the Kimberley Civic Arena.
The Golden Rockets were unable to keep pace with the Nitros' scoring during the Friday night game, and the home side went on to a 7-4 victory, for their third victory of the season.
On Saturday night, the Nitros took a 2-1 lead over the Osoyoos Coyotes into the second period, but the visitors took advantage of a spate of Kimberley penalties, and ended up winning 7-3.
?We had a good game Friday night,? said Dynamiters GM Garry Jacklin. ?We had a good period and a bit Saturday night, then basically fell apart.?
After Osoyoos opened the scoring early in the Saturday night game, the Dynamiters got first period goals from Senate Patton (on the power play) and Clayton Tilleman to take the lead. Tilleman?s second goal early in the second frame maintained that lead at 3-2, but then the penalty trouble began.
?We let them (Osoyoos) get into our heads. We dominated them for the first period and start of the second period, then they started chatting and we started listening,? Jacklin said.
?We were okay going into the third ? we were only down 4-3 and we had a power play, so we still had a chance. But we were also thinking about what they were doing to us instead of focusing on what we needed to do, which is scoring goals.?
Osoyoos went on to score five unanswered goals, three on the power play.
Jacklin said the Dynamiters are a pretty skilled collection of players, ?but lot of times they don?t see what got them to where there at, when they?re up by a couple of goals, which is hard work. They have to use hard work to be successful.?
Jacklin said the key is getting the players to buy into the system. ?There?s a group that has to lead, and they haven?t quite found that yet. I think when they finally get the group together and they realize they have to work hard every second and every shift, they?ll be successful.?
That success was in evidence on Friday night. Kimberley took a two-goal lead over Golden in the first period, courtesy of Brennan Foreman and Dylan Lyman. Golden fought back, and traded scoring with the Nitros in the second and third, but a power play goal by Brock Leavins, and two ? count ?em, two ? short-handed goals in a row by Kristian Petit, late in the second period and early in the third, ended up being the difference. Both short-handed goals were assisted by Senate Patton ? Petit and Patton were named first and second stars, respectively.
Rylan Duley also scored for Kimberley in the third, and Olli Dickson added an empty net goal for good measure.
?I see a great team here,? Jacklin said. ?We might have to tweak it here or there a little bit, but I see a very good hockey team when we?re at our peak and working hard.?
The Dynamiters have a road trip coming up, heading out to the Okanagan to take on the Kelowna Chiefs on Friday, Oct. 1, and the Penticton Lakers the next night.
?The biggest thing is we lost both our road games (so far), and we need to get into the Okanagan and win a couple, which would help our confidence,? Jacklin said.
