The Cranbrook and Kimberley RCMP are suggesting some safety tips to help everyone have a safe and happy holiday season.

Be alert and aware of your surroundings

Pay close attention to who is around you and what activities are going on around you. Trust your instincts; if you feel uncomfortable with a place or person, get away. When shopping, park in a well-lit area and never leave your car unattended with the motor running or with the keys in the ignition. Speak with your children about stranger encounters and what to do in the even you are separated.

Don't leave valuables unattended in your vehicles

Parking lots can be target-rich environments for thieves. Never leave your purse, wallet, cell phones or personal information in your vehicle. Parcels and other bags can be theft attractors. Thieves are looking for easy targets and anything you can do to deter them from choosing your car, the better. Remember to lock your car and use an anti-theft device.

Don't get scammed

You may have already read or heard of the scam prevention information provided by Sgt. Laurie Jalbert. To further highlight her suggestions, please remember to use your credit card smarts and don't carry extra credit cards or large amounts of cash. Keep a master list of all credit/debit cards in a safe place in the event that your wallet is lost or stolen. Safeguard your identity and never give out your personal information over the phone. Use your road sense

Prepare for winter driving conditions as the weather can change quite quickly in our area. Ensure that your vehicle is properly maintained and equipped with the appropriate tires and cold weather emergency supplies. Buckle up and be a patient and courteous driver this busy holiday season. Always plan ahead and arrange for a designated driver when attending social events. Be a responsible host and ensure impaired guests find a safe ride home.
