This La Nina spring is making for a long, slow snowmelt in the Nature Park, so this year the annual Mother's Day walk will start at the Riverside Campground and do a loop that will include Sunflower Hill.
The first spring flowers are starting to show on the hillside and the spruce grouse are thrumming along its brow. The balsam root plants are up, but whether we will have any "sunflowers" showing by Mother's Day is anybody's guess.
We are planning to hike across the open slopes on Sunflower Hill Trail and then back along the top to Duck Pond Trail and down to Jimmy Russell Road. Total elevation change is about 100 metres and we will be dawdling a fair bit to take in the signs of spring.
The walk starts at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 8th, at the upper parking lot of the Riverside Campground and will take about 2 hours. Bring your camera (and your Mom) and get some fresh air and exercise as we enjoy spring in the Nature Park. Everyone is welcome.
