Kimberley's mining railway back in business

Being forced to shut down operations when you've barely started is not a great way to start the tourist season, so the folks at the Sullivan Underground Mining Railway were very pleased to be notified late last week that they can resume business.

The railway had been open for weekend operations beginning with the May long weekend, but were forced to close down two weekends ago with the sloughing situation in the Mark Creek Valley.

That situation is now under control and the bank repaired, but at the time, there was concern about anyone being in the lower Mark Creek Valley, which is of course where the powerhouse and underground tunnel are located.

The City informed the Railway that they can proceed with train rides once again and service resumes this weekend, Saturday, June 18, with the express rides on Sunday mornings.

The Railway also expects two student tours during this week.

Beginning July 1, 2011, the Railway goes into full seven day a week service for the summer, closing after Labour Day weekend.
