The Kimberley Dynamiters dropped a 3-2 decision at the Civic Centre on Friday and took a 3-2 win over the Fernie Ghostriders on Saturday in the two club's first home-and-home series against each other of the regular season.
Dynamiters head coach Roman Vopat was clearly not impressed with the effort put forward by the team under him after their loss on Friday.
"The last five minutes was good, but until then, we got outworked and that's something that I don't like," he said. "I know we didn't play a better team today; we got out played, we got outworked. At home, that's unacceptable."
It was a frustrating game for the Nitros on home ice as the squad seemed to be on their heels before the game even started, with Issac Schacher getting an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty in the warm-up, which left the team shorthanded for the first two minutes.
The Riders opened the scoring after Connor McLaughlin flew down the wing and cut into the centre to rip a shot past Nitro stopper Jeremy Mosseau. Dynamiter forward Mitch Gallagher evened the score at one a few minutes later.
The Fernie club owned most of the play, as the Nitros seemed to have trouble controlling the puck and breaking out of their defensive zone in the first period.
Kimberley was also given a two-man advantage near the end of the frame, but nothing could find the back of the net
Tied at one going into the second, the Riders netted a powerplay goal after Josh MkSkimming shoveled the puck into the back of the net off a point shot from the blue line.
The Riders notched another goal in the third from Derek Georgopolous before the Nitros responded with a marker from Vannucci, which ended the scoring and finalized the outcome.
The Nitros had a bit of a spark at the end of the game, buoyed by a powerplay opportunity in the dying two minutes, but nothing could find its way past the Fernie goaltender.
Saturday seemed a reversal of the previous night's game, as the Nitros bested the Riders 3-2 during their home opener in Fernie.
The home team opened the scoring in the first period on a powerplay goal and managed to fend off the Nitros until near the end of the second frame, when two quick goals from Rylen Duley and Brennan Foreman gave the Dynamiters the lead.
Gallagher and Dylan Robertson also squared off after some roughhousing by both teams near the end of the period.
Vannucci scored the eventual game winner near the end of the third, and despite a response from Alex Pronchuk on the powerplay, the Nitros ended up with the win.
Braeden Ostepchuk stood between the pipes, facing 33 shots from the Riders.
The Nitros will head up to Invermere to face the Columbia Valley Rockies tomorrow night, and head to Castlegar on Friday to challenge the Rebels. The club will return to the Civic Centre for it's next home action on Saturday for another bout against the Rockies.
