Despite 6-1 win, Nitros outworked by Rockies in Invermere

Scoresheet not indicative of effort from the Kimberley club: general manager

The Kimberley Dynamiters toppled the Columbia Valley Rockies 6-1 on the road Tuesday night, but the score doesn't reflect the game, according to general manager Rick Allen.

Despite the score, Allen was disappointed in the effort put forth by the Dynamiters and said the Rockies outworked the Kimberley club.

"They outworked us. If you get a point for how hard you worked in the game, Columbia Valley won that point," said Allen.

When a team steps out onto the ice, everyone needs to give 100 per cent, which did not happen on Tuesday night, Allen continued.

"We were just okay, that's all we were, was just okay. I didn't think our work ethic was there, I think that we had a bit of a hangover from the Fernie series," he said. "To be up front about it, I think we thought we were better than we are. We want to be a hard-working team and we want to be a hard-working team every shift."

Shots were almost even after the first period, as both teams held each other scoreless despite powerplay opportunities on both sides.

Richard Hubscher opened the scoring a few minutes into the second frame and the Rockies answered back five minutes later to tie the game.

"It was 1-1 at one point and they hit a goal post here and there and it certainly could have been a different result," said Allen.

A few lucky bounces, one of which included a goal scored by a redirection off a player's leg, seemed to go in the Nitro's favour.

The Rockies were also given 10 powerplay opportunities, as the Nitros got caught flat-footed in some situations and had to take penalties, Allen added.

"I think we were a little more aggressive on the penalty kill because we felt a little sheepish that we were taking penalties and we pressured their powerplay," he said.

Nitro stopper Braeden Ostepchuk was their best penalty killer between the pipes, turning away 30 shots and playing well for the squad in front of him, Allen added.

Three consecutive markers in the second period from Hubscher, Senate Patton and Jordan Bartusek boosted the Dynamiter lead and Rylan Duley and Taylor McDowell potted two more in the third to seal it up for the win.
