Nitros dismantle Border Bruins 10-2

Nitros score seven goals in second period alone during Saturday's win over the Grand Forks team.

A second period explosion from the Kimberley Dynamiters lifted the club to a 10-2 win over the Border Bruins in Grand Forks on Saturday night.

Tied at one after the first frame, the Nitros scored seven goals in the second during their romp in the Grand Forks arena.

Five Kimberley skaters had three point nights; Mark Strachan, Rylan Duley and Richard Hubscher all notched two goals and an assist, while Senate Patton tallied a goal and two assists. Brennan Foreman got all three of his points in the assists column.

"I just had to say you gotta shoot the puck more and create the traffic in front of the net because a big goalie like that, if he see's the puck, he's going to stop it," said Nitro bench boss Roman Vopat. "I think that was the biggest reason why we scored so many goals, plus, we were winning the one-on-one battles."

It was a rough night for Nathan Nicolson, who stood between the pipes for the Bruins, as he faced 36 shots, and stopped only 27 of them.

At the Nitro's end, stopper Braeden Ostepchuk allowed two goals in 27 shots to earn the win for his club.

"They were a good team and they created chances too, and if we didn't have him [Ostepchuk], we could've lost the first period," said Vopat. "?He kept us in the game and that's the biggest reason why we won."

Special teams made a little bit of a dent on both sides, as the Bruins scored their first goal shorthanded from Austin Lee.

However, the Nitros answered with one of their own in the second, when Strachan scored his first of the night while Dynamiters were a man down.

The Kimberley squad also scored three powerplay goals off of eight opportunities handed to them during the contest, while killing off all of the Bruins' seven penalties.

Vopat said the Nitros are spending 20 minutes every practice on special teams and credits that effort to the success against the Border Bruins.

The win puts the Nitros in second place in the Eddie Mountain division behind the Fernie Ghostriders, which are in a four-way tie for third place in the KIJHL.

Next home action for the Dynamiters will be tomorrow night at the Civic Centre in Kimberley against the Golden Rockets.
