Incredible, astounding and amazing are just some of the adjectives that come to mind if you are lucky enough to witness Para-Alpine ski racing.

Kimberley residents will once again have an opportunity to see live ski racing as the IPC Telus NorAm Speed Event returns to Kimberley February 14 through 17, 2012.

While the Kimberley event is a NorAm race rather than a World Cup, these athletes - about 40 racers from eight different countries are expected - are World Cup ski racers, just returned from the circuit in Europe and some fresh from the X Games. This race will be used a tune up for the upcoming World Cup at Panorama.

Athletes include Kimberley's own Josh Dueck (his latest accomplishment being an X Games bronze medal), Sam Daniels (2012 Gold metal - X Games), Matt Halatt, Kimberly Joines and up-comers Caleb Brousseau and Kirk Schornstein.

Other countries include Great Britain, Australia and the United States. The Aurstralian development team is currently training at the Kimberley Alpine Resort with their head coach.

Kimberley's Steve Bova heads up the race organization, as always. He will be looking for volunteers to help out with the races.

"We're looking for anyone who would like to help out," Bova said. "Ideally, you would be on skis but there are jobs for non-skiers as well. We need gatekeepers, coarse workers, side slippers. It's will be a lot of fun. We provide lunch."

If you'd like to help out call Bova at 250-427-5803 or email sbova@shaw.ca

The races will take place on the dedicated race run at KAR, the Dreadnaught. Two races are planned, the Super G and the all-out speed race the Downhill. Training occurs on Tuesday and Wednesday, with the Downhill race on Thursday and the Super G on Friday. Thursday's races are at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. with the same schedule on Friday.

Awards will be presented at KAR each race day, 30 minutes after the afternoon's race is completed.
